Augeri Welcome Message

Dear ACS Community,

My name is Steve Augeri, and I am pleased to be joining the community as the interim Secondary School Principal for the remainder of this academic year.

Just a bit about me:  My wife, Tiffany, and I are originally from Connecticut and have been international educators for the last 19 years.  We both cut our teeth as secondary social studies teachers for several years in Connecticut and Virginia before making the momentous decision to join the international teaching ranks way back in 2004.  In that year, we took up teaching posts at the American International School in Dhaka, Bangladesh, and life, as they say, has never been quite the same.  Following 4 years in Dhaka, we accepted teaching positions at Dubai American Academy, where I also served as the head of the social studies team.

In 2009, I made the transition out of the classroom and into school leadership at the American International School of Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, where I served as the Director of Human Resources and Communications.  Following that, I relocated to Shanghai Singapore International School in China (where Andrew and I worked together).  For part of my tenure, I managed the school’s non-academic operations before transitioning into a deputy division head position working with both the primary and secondary principals.  It was also in Shanghai that our family expanded to 3 with the arrival of our son, Nicolo.

In 2015, I joined Oberoi International School in Mumbai, India, as the Deputy Head of School.  During my second year, the organization undertook the planning and opening of a second campus, and in 2017 I was appointed to be the new campus’s founding head of school.  This was the epitome of a start-up experience, and I was involved in all aspects of this effort:  Assisting in the building design process, recruiting new faculty, admitting and orienting new students and families, implementing academic programs, establishing the school’s culture, and so much more.  It was an intense experience, but one that was also incredibly enriching and rewarding.  In 5 years’ time, we grew from 250 students to 1,100, established ourselves as an IB continuum school, secured CIS/NEASC accreditation, and last May, celebrated our first graduating class.  

In June 2022, I stepped down from this role.  With the school on a very solid footing, and after the intensity of the COVID experience in India (during which we conducted school remotely for 18 long months), our family felt that it was a good time to move on from Mumbai.  After over 10 years of chasing jobs for me across the globe, we wanted to prioritize finding a good fit for Tiffany and Nico, and they are now happily settled in at the American Overseas School of Rome (Tiffany as the school’s university counselor, and Nico as a second-grader).  It also was a good time for me to take a temporary break from leadership to catch my breath and reflect on the experience of leading a school through trying times.

If at this point it occurs to you that I didn’t foresee leaving Rome to spend 3 months in Bolivia, you would be correct.  However, I could not pass up the opportunity to join a school of the caliber of ACS and experience life in a region I’ve long read about but never experienced directly.  In addition, after spending the last several years in whole-school leadership roles, I am thrilled to be able to once again work closely with Secondary students—an age group that I’ve long found interesting and full of energy.

While we won’t have much time together, I want you to know how excited I am to be a part of your school community and culture.  Above all, I look forward to doing everything I can to support students, faculty, and parents as we work together to bring this academic year to a successful and happy finish.

I realize that Thursday will be a busy day as you interact with your children’s teachers, but I plan to make myself available in the Secondary Library for any and all who wish to stop in to say hello.  I look forward to meeting as many of you as possible!

Mi nombre es Steve Augeri y me complace unirme a la comunidad como director interino de la escuela secundaria por el resto de este año académico.

Solo un poco sobre mí: mi esposa, Tiffany, y yo somos originarios de Connecticut y hemos sido educadores internacionales durante los últimos 19 años. Ambos nos desepeñamos como profesores de estudios sociales de secundaria durante varios años en Connecticut y Virginia antes de tomar la trascendental decisión de unirnos a las filas de la enseñanza internacional en 2004. En ese año, asumimos puestos docentes en la Escuela Internacional Americana en Dhaka, Bangladesh, y la vida, como dicen, nunca ha sido la misma. Después de 4 años en Dhaka, aceptamos puestos docentes en Dubai American Academy, donde también me desempeñé como jefe del equipo de estudios sociales.

En 2009, hice la transición del salón de clases al liderazgo escolar en la American International School of Riyadh, Arabia Saudita, donde me desempeñé como Director de Recursos Humanos y Comunicaciones. Después de eso, me mudé a la Escuela Internacional de Singapur de Shanghai en China (donde Andrew y yo trabajamos juntos). Durante parte de mi mandato, administré las operaciones no académicas de la escuela antes de hacer la transición a un puesto de subjefe de división trabajando con los directores de primaria y secundaria. También fue en Shanghai donde nuestra familia se expandió a 3 con la llegada de nuestro hijo, Nicolo.

En 2015, me uní a Oberoi International School en Mumbai, India, como directora adjunta de la escuela. Fue una experiencia intensa, pero también increíblemente enriquecedora y gratificante. En 5 años, crecimos de 250 estudiantes a 1100, nos establecimos como una escuela continua del IB, obtuvimos la acreditación CIS/NEASC y, en mayo pasado, celebramos nuestra primera promoción.

En junio de 2022, renuncié a ese cargo. Con la escuela sobre una base muy sólida y después de la intensidad de la experiencia de COVID en India (durante la cual dirigimos la escuela de forma remota durante 18 largos meses), nuestra familia sintió que era un buen momento para mudarse de Mumbai. Después de más de 10 años de buscarme trabajos en todo el mundo, queríamos dar prioridad a encontrar una buena opción para Tiffany y Nico, quienes ahora están felizmente instalados en la American Overseas School of Rome (Tiffany como consejera universitaria de la escuela y Nico como estudiante de segundo grado). También fue un buen momento para tomar un descanso temporal del liderazgo para recuperar el aliento y reflexionar sobre la experiencia de dirigir una escuela en tiempos difíciles.

Si a estas alturas usted está pensando que yo no tenía previsto salir de Roma para pasar 3 meses en Bolivia, estaría en lo cierto. Sin embargo, no podía dejar pasar la oportunidad de unirme a una escuela del calibre de ACS y experimentar la vida en una región sobre la que he leído mucho pero que nunca experimenté directamente. Además, después de pasar los últimos años en funciones de liderazgo en toda la escuela, estoy encantado de poder volver a trabajar de cerca con los estudiantes de secundaria, un grupo de edad que durante mucho tiempo he encontrado interesante y lleno de energía.

Si bien no tendremos mucho tiempo juntos, quiero que sepa lo emocionado que estoy de ser parte de su comunidad y cultura escolar. Sobre todo, espero hacer todo lo posible para apoyar a los estudiantes, profesores y padres mientras trabajamos juntos para llevar este año académico a un final exitoso y feliz.

Estoy consciente de que el jueves será un día ajetreado mientras interactúa con los maestros de sus hijos, pero planeo estar disponible en la biblioteca secundaria para todos y cada uno de los que deseen pasar a saludar. ¡Espero conocer a tantos de ustedes como sea posible!
