From the Secondary Principal: 24 April 2023
Dear Parents,
Secondary School is gearing up for Student Council elections in early May. In advance of that, I would like to share some important changes to the StuCo bylaws that will take effect with this year's election and, looking much further down the road, next year's elections as well. Our Student Council leaders have already shared this information with students.
Before I get to those changes, a little background:
Students may choose to run in one of two scenarios (and here I will admit that I've had to familiarize myself with our terminology): The first option is to run for office at the "class" level; that is, as a representative of one's class/grade level. The second option is to run for office in a "block"; in other schools this would be regarded as the executive council that leads the entire Student Council structure in the Secondary School. Rather than running as individuals, in both scenarios students get together to form teams of candidates. When balloting is conducted, students vote for a team to represent their class/grade level and for another team to lead the Student Council.
OK, now for the changes that have taken effect for this year's elections. The bottom line is that we want to encourage broader participation in Student Council across the Secondary School. These changes will not only encourage students to run who previously have not, but will also motivate student with prior Student Council experience to try their hat at running for different positions.
First, in the "block", the new positions of Secretary and Social Media Manager have been added (taking the number of positions in the "block" to six, along with President, Vice President, Treasurer, and Supervisor).
Second, each class representative team must contain two male students and two female students as a way to maintain equity (with students in each team running for the positions of class president, vice president, treasurer, and secretary).
Third, students will be allowed to serve as class representatives twice in Middle School (Grades 6 - 8) and twice in High School (Grades 9 - 12). In addition, students can serve in the "block" twice across the Secondary School. If you're counting, this means that the maximum number of years any student may serve in Student Council is 6 out of the 7 years total in Secondary School.
Fourth, each time a student serves, whether as a class rep or in the "block", it must be in a different position (positions are detailed above).
Finally, Middle School students may not run in consecutive years.
We are so excited to begin this process again to determine which students will lead our Secondary School during the 2023-24 academic year!
Best wishes,
Steve Augeri
